“Hearing ‘no’ doesn’t mean ‘never'”, and what to do about it

This quote that came up on a list of quotes to help you deal with rejection. It underscores the idea that rejection is a milestone, a sign of progress, a proper kick in the butt. It’s a sign that you need to work on something, be patient, or change your direction.

Whether it’s for a job, a goal, or a relationship, rejection is oddly empowering. You took a risk; you put it out there. You should be proud. Hopefully you leaned something and know how to move forward with new wisdom.

Hearing “no” doesn’t mean “never.” The only things you can do are to constantly pursue growth … and make sure you’re prepared to walk in the room.

Antoinette Robertson

I like how this quote focuses on self-reflection and growth rather than wasting your time feeling bad or, worse yet, becoming resentful.

“Every day of your life that you spend crying over some silly girl is a complete waste of time.”

Here’s another quote from the movie Boyhood, this one from the dad played by Ethan Hawke. I always admired this character as a single dad who is supportive, engaged, and loving to his kids but also has his own thing going on.

The high-school-aged son is hurting because his girlfriend Sheena left him for a college lacrosse player. The son is feeling bad about himself.

The dad gives a great pep talk, reminding his son, “If you truly take care of you, you will be amazed at how much girls like Sheena start lining up at your front door” and then:

I guarantee you that every day of your life that you spend crying over some silly girl is a complete waste of time.

That’s easier said than done, but so true.

“You’re only as good as your record collection.” 🎧

The little, square book Show Your Work has changed they way I think about blogging, processing my ideas, and has even helped me see my own music playlists differently.

And thus, my first book snippet.

Okay, it’s actually my second snippet – I just didn’t realize that the first one (also from this book) was a snippet when I wrote it.

This book says that creative people should embrace collecting as part of the creation process.

There’s not as big of a difference between collecting and creating as you might think.

Show Your Work

Great musicians, writers, and artists tend to collect and appreciate other people’s work. “The reading feeds the writing, which feeds the reading,” the book says. Or to put it another way:

You’re only as good as your record collection.

Hopefully this approach works for me as I dig into music creation.

To that end, here is my ever-growing list of new songs I like, built up gradually over the last few years, thanks to Shazam and a few coffee shops with their own great playlists. As of this writing, this playlist is over 49 hours long and could double as its own radio station.

Don’t hoard indeed. 🤷🏻‍♂️

“You have to have a direction before you can get movement.”

A wise man told me this recently in regards to a specific problem, but I think it applies more generally.

You have to have a direction before you can get movement.

Unlike most of quotes I post, this one didn’t even come from a famous person, just a wise friend. 👨🏻‍🚀🙏

I would love to be able to illustrate like this myself some day, but for now I’ll borrow from Alex Mathers. #goals
