“Every day of your life that you spend crying over some silly girl is a complete waste of time.”

Here’s another quote from the movie Boyhood, this one from the dad played by Ethan Hawke. I always admired this character as a single dad who is supportive, engaged, and loving to his kids but also has his own thing going on.

The high-school-aged son is hurting because his girlfriend Sheena left him for a college lacrosse player. The son is feeling bad about himself.

The dad gives a great pep talk, reminding his son, “If you truly take care of you, you will be amazed at how much girls like Sheena start lining up at your front door” and then:

I guarantee you that every day of your life that you spend crying over some silly girl is a complete waste of time.

That’s easier said than done, but so true.

“Baby, you’re nowhere”

The irony of staying in it, and trying to make it work, even when you know you’re swimming upstream. Sometimes we’re drawn to a challenge, even if we know it’s doomed.

We’re cut adrift
We’re still floating
I’m only hanging on
To watch you go down
My love

The irony of someone thinking maybe they don’t belong there, and so they don’t.

The men who love you, you hate the most
They pass right through you like a ghost
They look for you, but your spirit is in the air
Baby, you’re nowhere

Another great U2 cover by Transient.

“Sometimes it’s their looks, but it’s never just that.”

I recently rediscovered a dazzling post from one of my previous favorite writers on Medium, who has taken lately to more of a “We’re screwed” vibe. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ‘‰What Really Makes Someone Beautiful

Despite the title, this is not just one of those “beauty is only skin deep” platitudes.

Aren’t we drawn to people with hidden depth and curiosity? People who show who they really are. People who are strong, funny, creative, and kind. People who see beauty in the weirdness and in the darkness. People who are not innocent, even if they appear innocent.

Beauty can be found in the balance of all these things.

The Three Pillars of Charisma

I used to think being charismatic was all about telling amazing stories and making people laugh. Not being a great storyteller or much of a comedian, I thought I could never be charismatic. Fortunately, this article says I had it all wrong. πŸ˜‚

It’s about being present, removing self-doubt, and being kind and accepting to other people. Presence, power, and warmth. That sounds pretty manageable, right?

Now go out there, be in it, relax, and be nice to people. Congrats, you’re charismatic. ☺️
